​In olden days, men became greatly terrified on earth from snakes and took refuge of Kasyapa, the supreme amongst the Munis. The Maharsi Kasyapa became very afraid. He then with Brahma, and by his command composed a mantra following the principal motto of the Vedas. While composing this mantra, he intensely thought of the Devî, the Presiding Deity of that Mantra. Through the power of his Tapasya and through the mental power, the Devî Manasa appeared. She was named Manasa Devi as she was produced from the sheer influence of mind. She also plays with the mind, so is called Manasa. She saved the Naagas in the Snake Sacrifice performed by Pariksit. So, she is named Nagesvarî and Naga Bhaginî. She is capable to destroy the effects of poison. She is called Visahari. As she got Mritasamjîvanî (making alive the dead) from Lord Siva, she is known by the name of Mritasanjîvanî. The snakes run away out of fear from the sight of him who performs the Manasa devi mantra puja and homam. He who performs Manasa Devi Puja gets unbounded name and fame in this world. He who worships Mansa devi on the panchami thithi becomes certainly wealthy, endowed with sons and name and fame. He is freed from the kala sarpa doshas or any naga doshas in his horoscope. One who has Chandra graha dosha or mental illnesses can also be freed from the doshas and problems by the blessings of Manasa devi.
